Risk Management - Risk Register Workshop

Formalised risk management is now practiced by almost all commercial and public service organisations. Policies have been developed and frameworks implemented, at the heart of which lie risk registers. Evidence suggests, though, that many risk registers are not the effective management tools they should be. In some cases, simply completing a risk register is viewed as the aim of risk management, while in others the content of registers is vague, inaccurate or misunderstood.

Risk registers should drive the management process, their content informing decision-making as well as providing assurance that threats to objectives have been identified and are being controlled. Facilitated such that it is highly participative, with considerable interaction between delegates, this one-day workshop is designed to assist organisations in the formulation of effective risk registers. It includes:

• an opening presentation on the function of risk management, including reference to the organisation’s existing policies and focusing upon the relationship between risk management and the achievement of objectives
• a review of the basic risk management process covering
• risk identification
• the role of risk owners
• evaluation/assessment of risks (including scoring)
• application of risk tolerance
• determining and actioning risk controls
• monitoring/measuring the effectiveness of risk controls
• maintaining vigilance for new/revised threats
• the introduction of a generic risk register containing the key fields to be completed by delegates when working through the workshop case study
• a case study, looking at a typical organisation, its management and its objectives at corporate and operational levels, for which the delegate group will
• identify risks to stated objectives
• describe risks in a clear, unambiguous manner
• establish the most appropriate risk owners
• assess the risks in terms of their probability and impact
• decide the type of controls that may be enacted
• consider the way in which the effectiveness of the controls might be measured, including the assessment of net/residual risk and consequent additional controls
• an examination of means by which required practices regarding use of risk registers can be embedded within day-to-day management activities
